Light the Menorah

L’Shana Tovah

A long time ago back in history
Around the year 174 BCE
There was a Syrian king with a lot of enemies
And he went by the name Antiochus Epiphanes
He lost his war with the land of egypt
In Jerusalem, on the jews he flipped
The temple got robbed and the torah burned
Many Jews died as his hatred churned
Worship forbidden for it meant death
Life as a Jew didn’t have much left
Thousands were murdered from town to town
Where there was an idol not a Jew bowed down

(CHORUS)
Come on everybody and let’s spin the dreidle
Keep the story alive if you’re willing and able
Read from the torah and light the menorah
Eat potato latkes and all do the horah

Matathias and Judah were father and son
Respected Jews with a belief in one
From the village of Modin the Maccabees came
Their faith was strong, like a burning flame
The hills of Judea is where they hid
Then strike at the Syrians is what they did
Sometimes they won, sometimes they lost
Devotion to their faith was worth the cost
Jerusalem and the Temple, the ultimate goal
To take back the life that the Syrians stole
Out numbered, ill equipped Judah led his men
Against 40,000 Syrians way back then

(CHORUS)

One by one those heathens fell
Destiny knew what time would tell
The temple reclaimed and cleansed from sin
A new altar was built for the Jews to begin
Rededicate the temple for the world to see
It was the year 164 BCE
The 25th of Kislev little oil remained
To light the menorah with a brand new flame
Somehow the oil lasted ‘till more was made
They say it was a miracle the flame had stayed
The Jews had favor in the Lord’s great ways
That’s why Jews celebrate for those eight days

(CHORUS)

Where my Heebs at? Shalom! (4x)
Where my Heebs at, where my Heebs at, where my heebs at, shalom!
