Memories of Hanukkah

I remember growing up at Hanukkah time
Long before the story was a Hanukkah rhyme
The way the house looked, the smells from the kitchen
The best holiday, no way I’d be missing
My yamulke on, the menorah on the table
Latkes on my plate and gelt near my dreidel
Longing for presents, dinner went fast
Candle lighting came, unwrapping in a flash
The Lazer Tag game my friends all got
We’d play it for hours and we’d play it a lot
Those days of old seem so very far away
Live as memories and in my mind will stay

(CHORUS) 2X

My memories of Hanukkah mean so much
Of latkes, menorahs, and gelt, and such
My memories of Hanukkah, My memories of Hanukkah

College years at Hanukkah things did change
I loved going home and I found it strange
A home cooked meal and a break from the noise
My needs weren’t the same and I didn’t want toys
Jewish friends from school, few and far between
Hillel wasn’t big and then just a dream
My school never felt like Hanukkah time
Home was the place for Maneschewitz grape wine
Home was warm and always felt Jewish
I loved Hanukkah, Mom and Dad always knew this
We used to play dreidel and eat all the gelt
Now my memories remind me of how I felt

(CHORUS) 2X

Post college time, life on my own
I found a good wife and made a new home
There’s no doubt about Hanukkah time
The house feels warm as the candles shine
The smells from the kitchen bring back memories
Of latkes and stuff from times like these
Traditions new, keeping true to the old
With chocolate coins in foil of gold
A silver menorah with candles a light
Make Hanukkah special on every night
I hope that my daughter can share the joy
At Hanukkah time I had as a boy

(CHORUS) 2X

Hanukkah memories of candle glow
Hanukkah memories don’t you know
Hanukkah memories to help us grow
Hanukkah memories of long ago
